Graduation Day, 8th Grade, 1962

Greetings all:

I am an alum of the school. I have many fond memories of my time there at ACS, like singing the Marseillaise in Madame Cooley's French class or as she would often say, c'est terrible, les garcons!  I attended 7th and 8th grades there 1960-62 and received an 8th-grade diploma in a simple ceremony (see photo). Also in retrospect, it was a very important time to be taking the Civics class (the cold war and atmospheric testing, the Berlin Blockade, the tensions in Cuba, etc).

My dad was an army sergeant attached to the US Embassy Motor Pool. Those two years in Greece were perhaps the most important in my formative years.

We lived in Kifisia for our first year there and Halandri for the second. I also remember well the American Club in Kifisia (I read afterward that it was formerly Nazi headquarters in WWII). During our time in Greece my dad took on the responsibility of hosting the concession stand in the outdoor theater at the club during the summer. I worked with him and can remember filling innumerable bags of popcorn and opening cold cans of soda on those warm summer evenings. In those days, the cans were made of steel and you had to open them with a puncturing opener.

After leaving Greece, we moved to Orlando, FL after that, where I went to high school (pre-Disney) and later to Vanderbilt for university. During Vietnam, I served as an officer in Nuclear subs. and later received an MBA from Harvard. I owe much of the foundation for my learning to my experiences at the ACS. (For example, the solid foundation in grammar and parsing sentences ☺️)
