The Sophist was a printed periodical publication reporting on the news and activities in the ACS Athens for many years. We are happy to share a series of articles from several issues of the seventies, which were kindly contributed by Susannah Sirkin, Class of 1972, one of the co-editors of the Sophist.
Susannah Sirkin wrote to us back in 2014:
I graduated in 1972 (having started in 8th grade in 1967) and was co-editor of the ACS newspaper, The Sophist, for a couple of years. We used to go downtown by bus (with special off-campus permission) to the printing press in Omonia Square to read the metal slug layouts upside down and backwards to make sure there were no errors (!)
I also performed in quite a few ACS drama productions (including one written by students) and a version of Our Town that was also performed at the Hellenic American Union. My mother, Helen Sirkin, was PTO president - I believe for two years or so. She passed away last September. She and the late former French teacher Stelios Angelonides, and also the terrific history teacher Nikos Stavroulakis, organized two ACS student trips to Crete. I also participated in the first ACS spring vacation trip to Paris when I was a sophomore - so yes, lots of stories!!!!
The excellent French language education I received at ACS helped me become fluent—a language I use frequently in my work today. Not to mention the ancient history input we received with phenomenal tours of the Acropolis.
If you have similar artefacts or stories from your years at ACS Athens, we'd be happy to highlight them. Thank you, Susannah, for sharing this piece of ACS Athens history with us!
