Time Capsule 70's edition - "New Blood, New Power" – A Glimpse into Student Leadership

Another Time Capsule piece, from the Sophist student newspaper, 70's edition.

📜 From the Archives: "New Blood, New Power" – A Glimpse into Student Leadership, 1970 Style! 🗳️✨

Take a step back in time with this bold and inspiring article from the November 1970 issue of The Sophist, where Student Council President Jim Aleveras championed a new kind of student government. With passion and vision, he proposed a fresh Student Constitution—one that empowered all students, not just elected leaders.

💡 “Just because they don’t hold an office is no reason their voices should be ignored,” Aleveras declared.

From rethinking the role of student government to giving students real influence through commissions on activities, discipline, and curriculum—this was student-driven democracy in action.

Do you remember the debates? The speeches? That feeling of making change from within the school walls? That was definitely the spirit in the early 70s!

The Sophist was a printed periodical publication reporting on the news and activities in the ACS Athens for many years. We are happy to share a series of articles from several issues of the seventies, which were kindly contributed by Susannah Sirkin, Class of 1972, one of the co-editors of the Sophist.

💬 Share your memories of student leadership and school spirit in the comments below—especially if you were there when Jim was leading the charge! Do you have school artifacts? We'd love to showcase them!
