Some children don't fit neatly into the boxes school asks them to fit into. Georgie Cris was one of them.
From kindergarten onward, Georgie struggled academically. Year after year, in subject after subject. His confidence took a quiet beating — because when the only measure of a child is how well he reads or solves equations, and those things don't come easily, it's hard for him to see what he is good at.
His mother, Helen, an ACS alumni and memorable drama diva, decided at the end of third grade: when Georgie came home, school was OVER. No homework, no studying. Afternoons would be for the things he loved. Drawing, creating... being a kid who was allowed to be good at something. And then she brought him to a casting agent — thinking he might enjoy it, thinking it might give him something.
On his very first casting, Georgie landed a major supporting role in an international feature film.
He spent the fall of 2024 on a set in Greece, acting alongside Academy Award-nominated actress Noomi Rapace in Hot Spot — a sci-fi thriller directed by acclaimed Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Smoczyska and acquired by Focus Features. George plays Zen.
His school performance, his confidence, his sense of himself — all of it transformed. Art did what years of homework could not.
Now the film has been selected for its world premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal this July — one of the most respected genre film festivals in North America, drawing 100,000+ attendees and the global film industry.
The production isn't funding cast travel so his family is making it happen themselves —and asking the ACS community to be part of it.
Being able to attend his first world premiere will not only allow Georgie the chance to experience recognition for all his creative work, but will also give him the chance to see what careers and avenues are available to him - from in front of the camera to behind. Better than any university brochure could offer!
A contribution of any size toward flights and accommodation for Georgie and his mother to travel to Montreal is a direct investment in a young person who found himself through art, and who is now being asked to stand on a world stage because of it.
ACS has always produced people who contribute substance to this world in a multitude of ways. Here's a chance to make sure one of our students gets to be there when his work meets the world.
With big love,
Helen & Georgie
