ACS Athens proudly announces that Tom Mustin (Class of 1978), a beloved ACS Athens alumnus and distinguished former journalist, TV anchor, and Adjunct Professor at the University of Colorado, will be the 2024 Academy Commencement Speaker. Tom's illustrious career in journalism, academia and his continued dedication to the ACS Athens community make him an exemplary role model for our graduates.

Tom's connection to ACS Athens began during his freshman year in 1974-75. He fondly recalls:

"I had excellent teachers at ACS, who helped prepare me for a career in broadcasting. I remember being scared to death to speak in front of my English class, but my instructor was so encouraging I somehow made it through that terrifying experience. She helped me conquer my fears and realize I could do it."

Since then, Tom Mustin's journey in journalism has been nothing short of remarkable. A three-time Emmy Award winner, Tom has been recognized for his solo-anchored coverage of the Bailey School shooting and for his part in the Emmy award-winning live coverage of the Hayman fire and the Bolder Boulder 10k run. He was also awarded the Mississippi AP Award for best continuing coverage of a developing story.

Beyond his professional achievements, Tom has remained an active and supportive member of the ACS Athens community. He currently serves on the ACS Athens Global Advisory Committee, providing invaluable insights and guidance to maintain and deepen alumni connections and support of the school. His involvement exemplifies his enduring commitment to giving back to the school that helped lay the foundation for his success.

Reflecting on his experiences at ACS Athens, Tom shared how the school played a crucial role in his ability to speak confidently in public.

"I now emcee numerous events with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Reading Partners, Adoption Exchange, Visit Denver, Alzheimer's Association, and many others. I credit my ability to speak in front of hundreds of people (and thousands of viewers every day) to my experience long ago at ACS."

Learning from Tom’s guidance as one of their last lessons at ACS Athens at the 2024 Commencement will undoubtedly be a highlight for the graduates. His story of perseverance, dedication, excellence, and conscious citizenship inspires and reminds us of the values that ACS Athens continues to instill in its students.

As for us, the ACS Athens Global alumni community eagerly anticipates Tom Mustin's address and looks forward to celebrating this significant milestone with him. He will surely leave a lasting impact on the Class of 2024 and to the rest of us!
